Choosing cabinets can be an overwhelming experience!

(Please read the following for more knowledge on kitchen cabinets)

What kind of wood? What style door? What color finish? And once style is determined, there is still more to figure out, including construction, length of warranty and accessories. With all this in mind, we’ve compiled some tips to make the decision-making process as easy as possible.

Look for a balance of design and functionality:
Ask yourself if your kitchen functions well with the way you live. Cabinets with your most frequently used items should be located and arranged most conveniently, with items you don’t use everyday stored out of the way. The design and style of your cabinetry should also fit your own personal taste.

Your Space:
Know your style. Identification of your own personal decorative style is key to selecting the right look for your cabinets. By doing a little bit of style research ahead of time, you insure a final design that fits with your personal tastes and preferences.

Your Style:
Consider the surrounding area. Look for a type of wood and finish that will complement your other furnishings. For example, if your kitchen opens directly into a dining or living area, choose kitchen cabinetry that enhances the items in that room.

Examine cabinet construction:
Compare the different types of cabinetry offered – stock, semi-custom and custom – and what kind of joints, hardware and support structures they are built with. Look at cabinets inside and out and consider how much wear-and-tear they’ll receive in your home.

Add Style Upgrades:
Finishing touches can make a big difference in the look of the entire room. Features such as; Dove Tail Hinges, Crown Molding, Pantrys, Roll out drawers, Special Racks, Trash Bin, & Automatic closing drawers. Rope moldings, glass doors and decorative hardware are just a few examples of upgrades that can add dramatic depth and character to your design.
After all, it’s not just about cabinets. It’s about creating a more convenient, comfortable home for the way you live.

Wood Construction:
Our collection features solid wood for all doors, drawer fronts, and face frames.

Properties of  Maple and Stains
Maple is a smooth and closed grained wood that is typically off-white in color with variations of light cherry to deep camel. Maple will turn amber as it ages due to a naturally occurring resin within the wood. All stains and finishes are subject to change overtime as the wood mellows and is exposed to light and other elements. Small mineral streaks are characteristic of this wood, forming as the trees absorb minerals from the earth. This gives cabinet faces a distinct and original appearance. All doors, drawer faces, and face frames are finished according to our 14-step finishing process. All unstained or unpainted maple within the cabinet and drawer boxes is coated with a clear finish to protect the wood from extreme temperatures and excess moisture.

Full Overlay Door Styles
All of our cabinet styles are full overlay cabinets. For full overlay, the door covers the face frame with 1/4" of space on the edge of both sides of the cabinet frame. This means that there is almost no face frame showing around the door and drawer fronts. This style overlay gives the kitchen or bath a clean and seamless design.

Butt Designed Door Fronts
Our double door cabinet boxes have butt doors. Butt cabinet doors close to rest directly against each other, effectively 'butting' together. This type of cabinet closure affords more convenient storage because the cabinet box does not have a center stile between the doors.

Mortise and Tenon Joint Construction
Simple and strong, the mortise and tenon joint has been used by wood craftsmen for centuries to join pieces of wood. This type of joint is typically used with wood pieces that are joined at a 90-degree angle. One end of the two pieces (the tenon) is inserted into a hole (the mortise) in the other piece.

Mitered Joint Construction
Our doors utilize a mitered joint construction for all door frames. The mitered joint is a proper cut angle that is determined so the separate pieces join to meet flush. This joint typically takes place at a 45-degree angle, which makes wide or narrow angle joint construction both easier to implement and stronger.

Five-Piece Door Fronts
The door front construction is a male and female butt system, making a tighter-fitting door that allows a more even stain than using a metal clip or fastener in the door face.

Metal Clip Construction
Our cabinets utilize a metal clip fastener for all box construction. The metal clip, as opposed to nails, screws, and clamps, allows the cabinet boxes to be assembled quickly without the use of numerous tools. The metal clip also provides a long term fastening method that will not breakdown over time such as glue. These clips can be easily removed to allow the cabinet boxes to be customized.

European Hinges
All of our cabinets also include the European Hinge. This hinge has a 35-mm diameter cup press. This cup design keeps the hinge from being reliant on screws as a primary fastener joining the hinge to the door.

Left or Right Single Door Option
All cabinet boxes are pre-fitted with a hanging rail on both the top and bottom of the box allowing the cabinet to be flipped either way. This means that all single boxes can be hung to open either left or right allowing complete customization.

Premium Box Construction
All Covered Bridge cabinet boxes are constructed with a face frame of solid wood that is 3/4" thick and 1-9/16" wide. The sides, back, top, and bottom of the cabinet box are constructed of premium plywood with maple veneer on each side creating a finished exterior and interior of the cabinet box. The back panel and the face frame each have two small grooves to allow for a better fit of each piece and more solid construction.

Solid Wood Drawer Boxes
The sides, back, and front of all drawer boxes are 3/4" solid wood with a clear coat sealer finish. The drawer bottoms are 1/2" plywood that is sealed on both sides to protect the wood from extreme temperature and moisture. This differs from most other drawer boxes that are typically constructed completely with plywood excepting the drawer face.

Standard Half Extension Base Shelving and Full Extension Wall Shelving
All base cabinet shelves are 3/4" thick and are half depth to allow for versatile storage. Wall cabinet shelves are also 3/4" thick with full depth shelving. All shelves are fully adjustable to allow complete storage customization.

How can I pay for a new kitchen?

Needless to say, a new kitchen can cost a lot of money. By replacing nearly everything in one of the most expensive rooms of the house, you are committing to a rather enormous expenditure. Unless your home is next in line for an HGTV kitchen makeover, how can you afford it?

Save, Save, Save

The best option is simply to save your money. Rather than piling up additional debt, why not pay in cash? Doing so will give you clear budget parameters, providing clarity and precision to your planning. Admittedly, saving the entire amount is a bit of an ideal, but it is still a great option.

Home Improvement Loan

Getting a home improvement loan is not that hard, even in a cash-strapped, loan-wary financial climate. This type of loan is specifically designed to be used for home repairs, renovations and improvements.

Home Equity Line of Credit

A Home Equity Line of Credit (abbreviated HELOC) is basically like opening a credit card to pay for your remodel. It allows you to borrow money up to a certain percentage of your home’s value and repay later.

Second Mortgage

Taking out a second mortgage can free up some extra cash to be used on a new kitchen. If you own your home and are paying one mortgage, you can take out a second mortgage, usually with higher interest and shorter terms. The result is an immediate lowering of mortgage costs.

A Few Reminders

A new kitchen will increase the value of your house. Let that sink in if you plan on selling your home soon.
Tax credits, government rebates, and discount coupons are becoming available for major appliances that are Energy Star-approved. Check your local state policies to see if any of these will help you to afford your new kitchen.
A few minor improvements are another great option. Consider countertop replacement, cabinet re-painting, installing new hardware or changing the lighting. All of these go a long way in revolutionizing the appearance of your kitchen. Besides, you can always expand the project later as your financial situation allows for it.

Some Choices For Kitchen Upgrading

More and more consumers are deciding on upgrades for the kitchen. This is true whether they buying a new house or when they decide it is time to replace the original kitchen fixtures, and appliances. Today new appliances, sinks, faucets, and countertops are getting more upscale as well as providing more function than ever before.

Kitchen cabinetry also provides more opportunities for upgrading your kitchen. By adding cabinet accessories and to your kitchen design layout, you will be able to fully customize and personalize your kitchen to be able to maximize its function and purpose. New handles can change the look of your cabinetry very dramatically. You can add or replace old glass panels with new decorative glass panels. They will really improve the look of your cabinets.

Some popular decorative cabinet upgrades include: furniture toe kicks, decorative glass doors, crown molding, and faux door panels.

Kitchen countertops are perhaps the most expensive design item for your kitchen but it can really make the biggest difference in the look of a kitchen next to the cabinets.

There have been many changes in kitchen countertops in recent years with more options and choices available when it comes to surfaces. These surfaces include solid surface, natural stone, quartz, wood, stainless steel, concrete, laminates and more. Today, there are even more dozen choices when it comes to kitchen surfaces with granite being the most popular. Granite like other natural stones such as marble, limestone, slate, soapstone is very durable. It is also less porous than the other stone surfaces and only requires resealing about once a year.

Soapstone is a natural store and was used by early New England settlers. Today it is still recognized as a good countertop choice. It is naturally resistant to harsh chemicals and heat, and unlike limestone or marble it does not stain. Also yearly maintenance can be performed with just mineral oil instead of using a sealant.

In addition, most countertop surfaces have several finish choices such as high gloss, honed, flamed and tumbled. The most common type is the high gloss or polished type of surface. Honed and tumbled are both matte finishes, but honed is typically smoother.

Giving your existing kitchen a new paint job. Paint can change the look of any room in the house and the kitchen is certainly no exception.

New window coverings can really brighten up a kitchen. You should select kitchen window coverings that can enhance the look of your kitchen décor and at the same time give your kitchen an inviting and open atmosphere. Some wonderful kitchen window treatments include: curtains, valances, blinds, and shades. One of the most important features that people decide upon when choosing a kitchen window covering is to use either solid colors or vivid patterns.

The type of lighting you select for your kitchen can really make quite a dramatic effect and help brighten any work area in the kitchen.

When it comes to kitchen appliances, in addition to the usual choices of conventional gas and electric burners, smooth top burners are also becoming popular in recent years.

10 Tips for Dealing With a Small Kitchen Design

To create the small but efficient kitchen design, you need to work on three major areas of small kitchen design: storage, lighting, and appliances.

Small kitchens may seem to be a very difficult design challenge, but they can also be functional, beautiful and efficient. Even with a small budget and building restrictions, you can find that there are many options open to you to transform your kitchen into something more ideal for your needs.

To create a more spacious look for your small kitchen design the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) recommends designing more unique storage solutions, mixing natural and ambient lighting, taking advantage of more space saving appliances, and adding personalized touches.

A small kitchen design requires creativity in coming up with storage solutions. Some ideas to try include:

1. Putting an island in the center of the kitchen that can provide freestanding storage that is also convenient from any spot in the kitchen.

2. Using a galley kitchen design in which the kitchen cabinets and appliances line up on either side of a corridor can work out very well for a small kitchen space.

3. Today’s appliance manufacturers have come up with more compact space-saving appliances make small kitchen design easier, such as refrigerators that are 24 inches deep instead of 30 inches deep, as well as appliances that can be hung underneath cabinets like microwaves.

4. Other small kitchen design tricks to create an eating area in the kitchen include using a drop table or a small sized round table with two small chairs that can be tucked into a corner. Or a built-in counter along the wall with chairs to provide an eating nook.

5. Another interesting challenge in small kitchen design is creating an illusion of space with under cabinet lighting or under the counter. With the proper type of lighting the kitchen can be made to appear larger and more pleasing.

6. The use of light colored cabinets with glass doors.

7. Installing deeper counters that can accommodate more appliances and increase work space.

8. Flooring tiles can be placed on a diagonal, and in a galley style kitchen hardwood flooring can be run the length of the kitchen.

9. For storage you can hang up pots and pans. This is a perfect way to free up cabinet space, and they add a certain charm and character to your small kitchen design. The insides of cabinet doors can be used to hang up everything from utensils, oven mitts, and other miscellaneous items. Pantry storage with units that go all the way to the ceiling with the upper cabinets to provide more space for seldom used items while making the lower cabinets more accessible with rollout shelves, lazy susans, and tilt-out bins.

10. Install a large kitchen sink, since larger sinks are considered to be more practical than small sinks when it comes to cleaning pots and pans.

Remember most kitchens are small. When you look in kitchen design magazines you naturally notice that the kitchens featured are large and so you might think your small kitchen in inadequate. But good small kitchen design means being able to create space and incorporating ample storage facilities and being able to fit in all the necessary appliances.

For many homeowners, the demolition can easily get out of hand when hammers and pry-bars are flying around. Before any remodeling project can begin, there is always going to be some demolition required.   Depending on how far you are taking your kitchen renovation project, that could mean simply removing the countertops or stripping the room down to the bare studs.   For many homeowners, the demolition can easily get out of hand when hammers and pry-bars are flying around.   While it may be a good way to get our your aggression, it could result in more problems than you had before.   Taking your time and actually disassembling the room versus demolishing it, is the smart way to go.   Here are 7 steps to remodeling your kitchen.

1.  Think Safety.  If you are going to around any electrical outlets or plumbing, it is important to make sure that  both are turned off.  As we all know, accidentally hitting an electrical wire can prove painful, if not lethal.  While hitting a water line may not be lethal, it can sure cause a lot of headaches and a big mess.

2.  Protect The Items You Are Keeping.  For example, if your floors are in good shape, and you plan to keep them, it is important to cover them.  The last think you want to do, is damage something during demo or construction and increase your overall remodeling budget.

3.  Remove all Fixtures.  If you are planning to keep any of the lighting fixtures, knobs, faucets, etc.. it is important to remove them and put them in a safe place.  That way, when you are wildly swinging that hammer, you damage any of the fixtures you were planning on keeping.

4.  Save the Trim.  In most cases, you can usually save and re-use the moldings and trim that you will find in the room.  By removing them now, you will prevent any accidental chips or dings when removing the countertops and cabinets.  Once you have the trim removed, start working on the countertops.   Depending on the type of countertop material, it may be as simple as using a utility knife to cut the caulk or paint between the countertop and the backsplash and cabinets.  For laminate or other artificial materials, you may also have to remove any screws that are holding the countertop to the cabinets.

5.  Removing the Countertops.  It is usually a good idea to have some extra hands to remove the countertops, but if you are trying to do it yourself, and it is a material like laminate, you can usually chop it into manageable pieces that you can haul out on your own.

6.  Base Cabinets.  Start by removing the drawers and any movable parts on your kitchen cabinets.  Once you have that off, it is time to climb into the cabinets and remove any of the screws that are anchoring the cabinets to the walls.  After the base cabinets are free from the walls, it is now time to separate them from each other.   Most base cabinets will be secure with screws as well, so by removing those screws you will be able to separate and remove all of the base cabinets.

7.  Taking Down the Wall Cabinets. When it comes to removing the wall cabinets it is a good idea to have an extra set of hands or a brace to support the cabinets.   Unlike the base cabinets, this time start by removing any of the screws that connect the cabinets to each other.  Once those are removed, you can start pulling out the screws that are holding each cabinet to the wall.  By starting the wall cabinets with the screws that are connecting them to each other, you can safely remove each cabinet individually.

Once the kitchen cabinets are removed, it is either time to strip the drywall or plaster off, or start patching so that you install your new cabinets.   By taking your time and not going with the sledge hammer approach to demolition, you can minimize the unnecessary damage and ensure that your project comes in under budget.

Buying Kitchen Cabinets At the Home Improvement Stores

The number of cabinet names and styles at the Home Improvement Stores like Lowes and Home Depot can be overwhelming, and so can the number of options and upgrades. They do a very good job of distracting you from the two biggest factors when it comes to buying kitchen cabinets. Find out what they are and how to avoid the common mistakes that people make when shopping for kitchen cabinets.

IF you have ever strolled through the kitchen section at one of the big home improvement stores (like Lowes or Home Depot), you know how overwhelming the selection can be. They do a very good job of offering every door style, wood type, and finish imaginable. They also do a very good job of distracting you from the two biggest features that you should be focused on- price and quality of construction.

When makng a large purchase like a kitchen, it is really easy for emotion and excitement to overshadow the total cost. It is really important to do some research before going into the store and have a budget in mind. Minor changes in the look of the cabinet can end up adding hundreds, if not thousands, to the cost of your kitchen. The same thing applies to unnecessary upgrades and accessories, which will quickly add up.

As a part-time contractor and rental property owner, I always tell people that I am talking to, to start their research on the internet.. The big stores will offer the name brand cabinets, but if you search online you will find that you can find similar, if not identical cabinets, for significantly less on-line. Have you ever noticed that the stores will usually price cabinets on a cost per square foot? This is done deliberately….. when you are emotionally attached to a particular style of cabinet, what is more likely to sway you from going over your budget- That upgrade is going to got you an additional $1.00 per square foot, or that upgrade is going cost you an additional $900? It is a great technique to distract you from the actual price you are paying and get you focused on the style and finish of the cabinets.

What you will also find is that the quality of the materials used will differ dramatically from cabinet to cabinet. As I mentioned before, the retail stores do a very good job of getting you caught up in the features and cabinet accessories of the cabinet face, but they often brush over the actual cabinet box construction? Ironically, most of the higher priced cabinets don’t actually use solid wood for the cabinet box. They may have a great looking cabinet door, but they are using particleboard or fiberboard for the construction of the cabinet box. The problem with both of these materials is that they are adversely affected by water and moisture….  What you will find on-line is that a lot of the lesser-known cabinetmakers actually use solid plywood, which creates a much stronger cabinet box. The other big factor in materials is how the cabinet is held together. Don’t be surprised to find out that some of the big name cabinet companies use staples or basic nails and glue to hold the cabinet together.  The best joinery would have to be dovetail joints, but right behind that is the cam lock.   The cam lock is used primarily on ready-to-assemble cabinets.

In doing some research on-line you will more than likely come across another common term in the cabinet industry- RTA, or Ready-To-Assemble. Don’t be scared away from this type of cabinet. If you ever go into the big stores and see pre-assembled or stock cabinets, they are actually RTA cabinets that have been assembled for your convenience (and they are significantly more expensive). There are three categories that separate RTA Cabinets from their competition-

1) Construction- Not all RTA cabinets are the same, but most of them use solid plywood for the cabinet box, solid wood for the face frames and doors, and they have an interlocking cam lock assembly that is a stronger bond than staples, nails, or wooden dowels

2) Price- if you find the companies that are importing them directly, the saving can be as high as 40-50% versus the name brand cabinets

3) Assembly- they are so easy to assemble that you can actually eliminate the added expense of hiring someone to assemble and install them

With all the advantages of RTA Cabinets, there are some inferior products on the market that you should steer clear of, but they are definitely worth doing some research on.  Typically when RTA cabinets or knockdown cabinets are mentioned, people automatically think of Ikea products.   Today’s ready-to-assemble kitchen cabinets are far superior than what is sold at Ikea.

So before you go running to your local big box supply store, take the time to do some research on-line. At the very least you will be a more educated customer and you can avoid the mistake of exceeding your budget for your kitchen.

Discount Kitchen Cabinets- A Lower Price Doesn’t Mean That You Have to Sacrifice Quality

As the price of wood continues to increase, so does the cost of products such as kitchen cabinets. “Cheap” cabinets no longer applies to the description of discount cabinets or rta cabinets. Find out how you can still get a great looking kitchen at a discount price and your neighbors will never be able to tell the difference!

The demand for cheaper building materials and the rapid housing boom a couple of years back, many kitchen cabinet manufacturers started looking overseas for a way to make a cheaper kitchen cabinet. In order to conform to the KCMA standards (Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association), they required the kitchen cabinet manufacturing plants overseas to increase the quality of the materials they used and increase the durability of the kitchen cabinets.

Discount kitchen cabinets or Discount kitchen cabinets or RTA Kitchen Cabinets up until this time had been made of fiberboard or particleboard, with staples or dowels holding the cabinets together. Many of the cheap kitchen cabinets at that time had a veneer surface that would warp or buckle when it came in contact with too much water. Because of these inferior features, they didn’t compare to the cabinets that were being manufactured in the U.S.

With the improvements to meet the standards of the KCMA, discount kitchen cabinets are now being built with solid plywood sides, solid wood face frames and doors. and cam locks to hold the cabinet together. Cheap Cabinets is no longer the right description for rta kitchen cabinets. With the improvements in design and function, Cheap Cabinets is no longer the right description for rta kitchen cabinets. With the improvements in design and function, discount cabinets started being imported by more and more companies to provide an alternative to the name brand manufacturers in the US that were asking, in some cases, 2-3 times as much for their kitchen cabinets as discount kitchen cabinet importers were. Even the big box stores started carrying their own lines of rta kitchen cabinets or discount cabinets, in both knockdown and pre-assembled form.

There are some drawbacks to buying discount kitchen cabinets… most manufacturers only carry 5-6 different styles or finishes, which limits your choices. In order to get discount cabinets at their cheapest price, you have to buy them rta or ready-to-assemble, which requires additional time and labor to assemble them.

The good news is that with the cam lock assembly, most discount cabinet lines only require a screwdriver to assemble them. So before buying your new kitchen cabinets at retail price, may sure you stop to take a look at discount kitchen cabinets or rta cabinets. Thanks for improvements, it is now possible to get cheap kitchen cabinets at a discount price.
